Start The New Year Out Right With Proper Planning

Planning For The New Year

It's that time of year again. Whether you are an organizational junkie or a casual planner, kicking off the year on the right foot is important. The fact that you are reading this shows that you want to accomplish this. By planning out this next year, you are living life for the important things instead of just taking care of urgent matters. Some of the things people like to plan for are:

  • New Year’s resolutions
  • Weight loss or Exercise
  • Relationships
  • Children
  • Stop bad habits
  • Continue your education
  • Learn a new skill or get a new job
  • Vacations
  • Time off
  • Activities/Events
  • Birthdays/Anniversaries
  • Meetings/Trainings/Seminars
  • Projects

The list could go on. One thing to remember is not to spread yourself too thin. One reason that resolutions often don't work out is because of packing too much into your schedule or setting unrealistic goals. Being smart about how you plan your year is essential to success.

Planning will definitely help you avoid the trap of failing at your goals. How you organize your year depends on your preferences. Some people like planners while others prefer a calendar system. Vertex42 provides a variety of both that can be printed or saved to your computer.

Calendars

Calendars can be a great way to organize your year and place important dates, activities and goals. You can use a Printable Calendar or a Perpetual Calendar (see screenshot on right) that can help you plan many months in advance. A perpetual calendar is one that can be continually used for many years. Create a wall calendar, school calendar, or an event calendar for your club or organization.

Planners

Planners might be a little more helpful to you if you need to include more detailed information. The free Daily Planner, Weekly Planner or Monthly Planner templates for Excel are designed so you can print the pages on 8 1/2 x 11 paper that will fit into just about any inexpensive 3-ring binder. If you prefer paper planners over electronic versions, this may be the perfect solution to help you organize your week in a simple and efficient manner. The planner pages can be made to scale to fit on other size paper as well if the user is familiar with Excel's print settings and page setup options.

The planner pages include most of the common convenient features including sections for recording notes, daily expenses, holidays, special events, prioritized tasks, people to call, and of course appointments. You can change labels, the hours listed, and make other formatting changes. Another option is the ability to list annual events like birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays. Up to 3 events per day will be listed automatically in the planner. Note that if you enter tasks or appointments directly into the planner, they won't change when you change the week. If you want to save an electronic copy instead of printing, just save a backup copy of the spreadsheet.

Have a great year!

  • The planners are great – thanks for sharing this.
How should the mini monthly calendars refresh ?

I’m using Open Office – I see the cells of the mini calendars in the calculation sheets refresh the cells correctly depending on the date entered, but the mini calendars shown on the diary page itself are not refreshed.

    Thanks in advance,

    Nico

  • Had a look at Excel – and could copy the mini calendar as a picture (with “copy as picture”).
It seems there is no equivalent in OpenOffice…
