This is a nice gradebook template for Excel from Microsoft.com. It automatically calculates averages and letter grades as you add assignments, quizes, etc. See link details for a tip for improving the formatting.

Inserting and deleting rows messes up the color scheme (alternating white/gray rows). A slight modification will fix this problem.

Using conditional formatting, you can make the rows alternate white/gray correctly even after adding and deleting rows.

Select all the cells in the gradebook table and add a conditional formatting condition using the following formula:

=MOD(ROW(),2)=1

You will also need to set the default background color for all of these rows to white. (Using the normal method of changing the background cell color).
